When one turns on the news, opens up Facebook, retweets a
post, reads a blog or laughs at a Meme, they will find a plethora of differing
opinions. At the beginning of the Coronavirus
scare, the public was told that 2.2 million Americans would die from this
virus. They were also told that 15% of
the population would contract this disease.
The world was told that it would be devastating to our elderly and those
with underlining health conditions. As
the numbers failed to add up, the narrative began to change and directives of
many businesses and churches had to close their doors to keep crowds from
forming while larger businesses like Walmart, grocery stores, Home Depot, Lowes
and others were allowed to stay open.
The message was stay at home and don’t associate with crowds larger than
5 otherwise you would continue to spread the virus unknowingly. While the masses complied with the government
regulations, there was more time to research while staying quarantined and allow
people to question what our leaders were telling us. The more questions that were and are asked
the more the narrative begins to change.
Over the last four weeks, the storyline from the mainstream
media has been to shut down the economy, stay at home and now some in the media
are seeing the negative effects of what a major recession or even a great
depression might look like. With so much
misinformation coupled with the uninformed, our society has been separated into
three groups. The first group are those
who believe the virus is deadly to all and feels that staying at home for 2
weeks even 2 months; we will be able to pick up right where we left off because
the virus will be eradicated. To
simplify this, it is not much different than a long vacation. The second group of people, usually those
whose families depend on a small business (owners and employees) to feed their
families. They have expressed shutting
down the economy will in return see the rise of unemployment which will bring
on a higher crime rate, increased social economic discrepancies, child abuse,
marital dissolutions and devastating health issues such as depression, stress,
suicides and more. The third group are a
mix of Democrats and Republicans as well as Independents or Libertarians. This group tends to point fingers at the
cause of the virus and our reactions.
They point to other countries such as China saying it was developed to
take down America and regain the advantage they lost due to the trade embargos
that had been placed. Others point to
Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer or even President Trump and state this virus is a
political move to achieve power. No
matter which group or category you fall into, you are right on some points and
probably wrong on several others.
However, there is good that can come out of the chaos. As businesses are finding ways to minimize
cost, furlough or lay off employees, reinvent themselves to continue to conduct
business with additional government regulations; many people are looking for
ways to help keep our economy strong while supporting safety measures to help
the most vulnerable.
The one certainty in all of this is that our society must
continue to move forward in a positive direction if we plan to recover from the
chaos that has been introduced in our lives.
